https://thefoyer.demand.film/phil-liggett/Back%20in%202018%20I%20was%20fortunate%20to%20be%20featured%20in%20the%20film%20MAMIL%20which%20was%20produced%20and%20directed%20by%20an%20Autralian%20film%20company%20led%20by%20Nicholas%20Bird%20and%20Eleanor%20Sharp.%20I%20had%20a%20great%20time%20being%20filmed%20for%20the%20movie%20and%20became%20good%20friends%20with%20Nick%20and%20Eleanor.%20%20MAMIL%20was%20narrated%20by%20Phil%20Liggett,%20and%20I%20can%20only%20assume%20that%20it%20was%20this%20interaction%20that%20led%20to%20Nick%20and%20Eleanor%20embarking%20on%20this,%20their%20next%20project,%20%E2%80%9CPhil%20Liggett:%20The%20Voice%20of%20Cycling%E2%80%9D.%20%20image%20I%20helped%20do%20a%20little%20bit%20of%20research%20for%20the%20film%20for%20Nick%20(who%20graciously%20gave%20me%20a%20credit%20in%20the%20film%20roll)%20and%20as%20a%20result%20was%20given%20the%20first%20rough%20cut%20to%20feed%20back%20my%20thoughts%20about%20it.%20%20Some%20reworking%20of%20the%20film%20has%20taken%20place%20between%20that%20rough%20cut%20and%20the%20final%20offering%20which%20I%20just%20watched%20as%20a%20publicity%20screener.%20The%20film%20itself%20will%20be%20launched%20to%20the%20public%20very%20soon%20and%20is%20being%20distributed%20by%20DemandFilm.%20%20Phil%20Liggett%20has,%20for%20anyone%20over%20the%20age%20of%20about%2040%20and%20who%20likes%20the%20sport%20of%20cycling,%20been%20the%20ubiquitous%20voice%20of%20the%20Tour%20de%20France,%20and%20many%20other%20cycling%20events%20(Olympics%20etc.),%20through%20the%20years.%20So%20it%E2%80%99s%20deeply%20pleasing%20that%20a%20film%20should%20be%20made%20chronicaling%20the%20life%20of%20someone%20who%20has%20become%20famous%20for%20being%20predominantly%20a%20voice%20and%20a%20great%20promoter%20of%20a%20sport,%20rather%20than%20a%20player%20in%20that%20sport%20itself.%20(Although%20as%20the%20film%20tells,%20Phil%20had%20a%20pretty%20impressive%20amateur%20cycling%20career%20before%20becoming%20a%20journalist%20and%20broadcaster).%20%20The%20film%20itself%20chronicals%20very%20specific%20and%20different%20aspects%20and%20periods%20of%20Phils%20life,%20and%20something%20that%20becomes%20very%20apparent%20and%20that%20the%20film%20highlights%20is%20that%20Phil%20is%20someone%20who%20shines%20in%20a%20partnership.%20Whether%20it%E2%80%99s%20the%20early%20partnership%20with%20David%20Saunders,%20his%20partnership%20with%20his%20wife%20of%20(almost)%2050%20years%20Trish%20and%20with%20whom%20runs%20some%20crucial%20Rhino%20conservations%20efforts%20in%20South%20Africa,%20or%20his%20best%20known%20commentary%20partnership%20with%20Paul%20Sherwen.%20%20Much%20is%20made%20of%20his%20charitable%20work%20to%20raise%20money%20to%20help%20fight%20the%20poaching%20of%20Rhinos%20on%20the%20doorstep%20of%20his%20home%20in%20South%20Africa.%20It%E2%80%99s%20a%20cause%20that%20you%20can%20tell%20is%20raw%20with%20emotion%20for%20him%20and%20something%20that%20he%20will%20likely%20do%20well%20beyond%20his%20days%20in%20the%20commentary%20box.%20%20image%20The%20film%20also%20covers%20the%20infamous%20Lance%20Armstong%20era%20of%20cycling.%20Phil%20was%20always%20the%20biggest%20supporter%20of%20Lance,%20both%20on%20the%20bike,%20but%20also%20with%20all%20the%20Cancer%20charity%20work%20that%20Lance%20did%20and%20Phil%20saw%20first%20hand.%20Phil%20is%20quick%20to%20remind%20us%20that%20irrespective%20of%20the%20sins%20that%20Lance%20comitted,%20there%20were%20thousands%20upon%20thousands%20of%20Cancer%20sufferers%20for%20whom%20Lance%20helped%20raise%20over%20$600m%20for,%20but%20almost%20more%20importantly,%20gave%20then%20real%20hope.%20Clearly%20Phil%20is%20troubled%20by%20the%20ultimate%20deception,%20being%20as%20Ned%20Boulting%20says,%20%E2%80%9Cbeing%20the%20last%20man%20standing%E2%80%9D,%20and%20realises%20how%20it%20has%20made%20him%20look.%20But%20therein%20lies%20the%20reality.%20The%20film%20depicts%20a%20man%20who%20is%20a%20thoroughly%20honest%20and%20decent%20man,%20who%20loves%20the%20sport%20of%20cycling,%20and%20whilst%20it%20is%20his%20job,%20also%20loves%20to%20promote%20it.%20Believing%20anything%20else%20would%20be%20to%20belie%20himself.%20Ultimately,%20I%20sat%20here%20as%20disappointed%20for%20Phil%20as%20I%20did%20for%20the%20sport%20itself,%20but%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20and%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20ever%20blame%20him%20for%20believing.%20Even%20if%20towards%20the%20end%20he%20let%20that%20belief%20get%20the%20better%20of%20him.%20%20There%20were%202%20professional%20relationships%20and%20losses%20that%20the%20film%20highlights%20and%20really%20impacted%20Phil.%20The%20loss%20of%20David%20Saunders,%20the%20man%20who%20kickstarted%20his%20career%20on%20the%20Tour%20de%20France,%20and%20Paul%20Sherwen,%20the%20ex-pro%20who%20became%20Phil%E2%80%99s%20co-commentator%20from%201986%20untl%20his%20un-timely%20death%20from%20heart%20failure%20in%202018.%20%20image%20It%E2%80%99s%20this%20second%20loss%20which%20sees%20the%20present%20day%20Liggett,%20commentating%20solo%20and%20now%20stripped%20of%20the%20UCI%20World%20feed%20and%20the%20ITV%20contract,%20but%20still%20supporting%20thankfully%20NBC%20for%20the%20Tour%20de%20France./
